Overview
Uuno is forced to complete his mandatory military service when it is revealed that he only spent one day in the army in his youth. As is typical of the Turhapuro series his family and friends become closely tied in with these events. His friends Härski Hartikainen and Sörsselssön return to the army for a refresher course and by chance Uuno's father-in-law, Councillor Tuura is made the Finnish Defence Minister. In one of the most memorable scenes, Uuno's wife, Elisabeth, dresses as Uuno and substitutes him for a day as Uuno has an apparently urgent meeting (at a restaurant) and while becoming lost in the woods with a malfunctioning radio, Tuura accidentally declares war on Sweden.

Uuno Turhapuro, the character we love to hate goes to army this time. That means nobody is in safe.Uuno Turhapuro armeijan leivissä (1984) has done the best at the box-office of all the Uuno movies.Ere Kokkonen is the director and writer.Spede Pasanen is the producer and portraying Härski Hartikainen, naturally. Also he and his buddy, Sörsselsson, played by Simo Salminen, are seen in the army.Vesa-Matti Loiri portrays Uuno himself, naturally, and he does it very comically, as he always did.The legendary Tapio Hämäläinen is once again Vuorineuvos Tuura and Marita Nordberg is his wife.Their daughter and Uuno's wife, Elisabeth Turhapuro is wonderfully portrayed by Marjatta Raita. This beloved actress sadly passed away last week at too young of age. Here we can still see her doing her most known role. And in this one she's also pretty comical, when you see her replacing Uuno at the army.Spede actually told her not to be funny, but she could be also that. Her husband Aarno Sulkanen also acts in the movie.Helge Herala, who was usually Uuno's teacher is now Kenraali.Mr. Herala turned 85 yesterday (congratulations!).It was really heartwarming watch him share his memories in the show "Viihteen 50" on Saturday. So the years pass...Elli Castren is there doing her Unelma Säleikkö character.Hannele Lauri is there playing tennis with Uuno.Eini visits there singing her hit "Kesä ja yö".Also the singer Riki Sorsa is there, not singing though.Ensio Itkonen visits there playing himself.Ismo Kallio does his impression of President Mauno Koivisto.Jyrki Kovaleff is the angry Kapteeni. The younger Mikko Kivinen is there. The late great Ville-Veikko Salminen plays the butler.Other actors to mention are Kalle Holmberg, Juhani Kumpulainen, Jukka Sipilä, Riitta Väisänen and Ulla Tapaninen. There are many funny moments in this movie, like when Uuno, Härski and Sörsselssön have a piece of entertainment. There's a burst of nostalgia when you watch these Uuno movies.Watch Uuno Turhapuro armeijan leivissä and laugh. For the old times sake!

Very typical Finnish movie. I have never quite understand why there have to be nudity in every finnish movie. It's like its compulsion rather than a necessary to the plot.

There is a same thing with the plot. Nothing surprising there either. "Normal" married couple going through hard times and husband isn't very willing to have sex. Solution: go have sex with somebody else and then you realize how much you love your spouse. Boring and everybody have heard and seen this 100 times before.

Well, acting is pretty good thank god. Especially Virtanen Ville is pretty good as a sad and little weird husband. Sinisalo Anu is OK too and seems to enjoy her role pretty much.

I had low expectations with this movie, but it was still quite disappointing. I have not read the book the story is based on, but it has to be better than this.

The movie totally lacks good spirit and for the viewer it's difficult to decide which genre this movie is trying to be. There's some awkward comedy where you should be laughing to an elder, then there's some over the top drama and also little hint of trying to be an art-retro-type of movie.

Movie might give you few good laughs if you leave your brains to sleep. However it lacks a lot of deepness and what made me dislike this movie the most is that the scenes are too separate to carry on a whole full feature film. Also it made the crowd feel sad that the daughter-in- law and son were so rude to 80-year old main character. There were too many scenes where daughter-in-law is angry with the old man because of his old believes and in one scene his son decides to crash his old loved car to a tree for some really selfish reason, but the story is told to the viewer as these people acted properly towards the old main character.

I don't usually enjoy movies that lack clear morals without any believable explanation. However the main problem with Mielensäpahoittaja is the lack of structure and badly executed plot.

I had quite the expectations about this movie, but at the same time I felt that it was going to be a rushed experience. I had to remember that I was going to see a kids' movie.

The plot for the movie felt simplistic, but I reckon it was for purpose. Artstyle was amazing, creating atmospheres with colors only few animations can stand up against. The new characters felt a bit alien, but as the movie went on they integrated to the movie pretty well.

As what comes to the entire film, it's certainly something you want to show to your children, but it doesn't really offer anything else. I have the idea that the Japanese anime-version offered anything to everyone. This movie doesn't get that similar feel right. It's still fun to look at and some scenes are quite thrilling.

Picard gave his best at bringing in the Moomin glory to white-screen and the results are satisfactory...for the children, that is.

I caught this film entirely by accident, with zero expectations or knowledge of the subject matter. I am unqualified to speak to the historicity of the events. But if it is close to historical events, what a beautiful film was made of it. Dealing with politics and religion and feminism, it is a rare little gem.

Christina, the Queen (actually "King") of Sweden from 1632 (age 6) until 1654, was tutored by a unique man, and grew up to be a young woman with curiosity about the world and a taste for life, she shook the institutions of the day, with an unkind mixture of success and failures. The film is mostly in English with a little French (accompanied by subtitles), the actors do a fine job, and I really appreciated the makeup team's subtle approach. I might have appreciated a script less focused on romance and more on personality and accomplishments, but then again, in our 20s, hormones can dominate all.

Drama, Romance, War

Overview
'The Midwife' (fin.'Kätilö') is a romance-drama set during WWII in Finland’s Lapland province, a major European battle ground of the war. Based on Katja Kettu’s bestselling novel, 'The Midwife' turns on the love affair between a Lapp midwife and a Nazi SS officer set against the backdrop of the Lapland War, which opposed Finnish and Germany armies in 1944-45. The themes in the story are international. It’s about conquering love and war, and class boundaries that are broken down.

This is just another finnish war drama which are made every year with the same clichès and spices. The package is just a bit different every time. I wonder when they'd stop supporting patriotic films and put the focus on different kind of films that are completely absent in Finnish cinema. There's so much talent that gets wasted if they make the same stuff over and over again.

Knowing the director's background in music videos, it doesn't really surprise that the film seems like a two hour long commercial music video rather than a film about love and war. The problem is that it doesn't touch at all when it should. Character development is non-existent and characters are left vague. All the atrocities are bypassed quite swiftly just as if nothing bad had ever happened. The main character is pregnant but the development of pregnancy is not shown at all. As a viewer i was left with a role of an observer. I was supposed to just admire the scenery.

The film is technically perfect but that's all there is to it. The sex scenes are actually so amusing and lack a good taste so much so that i think it will never get an international release.

To sum it up it's an average finnish war drama from a capable director who gave us Puhdistus some years earlier. It remains as his best film in my opinion. Finnish audiences who've seen war films over and over again might find this film quite tiring. I find Puhdistus more awarding to watch than this.

This might easily be one of the most nihilistic flicks i've ever seen. Despite IMDb currently labelling it as 'horror thriller', it seems it was supposed to be more like a mixture of slasher/thriller, drama/romance and a bit of comedy. However, it fails at each: It's thriller without suspense, a slasher without on-screen killings, a drama/romance without any tangible emotions, a comedy without one laugh.

Bland story made of generic thriller tropes, while the writers constantly deny the number one rule in screen writing - "SHOW, DON'T TELL!" - in a way that basically all information (characterizations, their relationships, motivations, background story) are merely given in form of dialogue. If you can't SHOW a story, but only TELL it via dialogue, you should rather release it as a book or radio play, instead of shooting an audio-visually dull movie like that.

Oh yes, since the movie takes place on a luxury liner, i was at least expecting a rather fancy set - but no, most of it are just boring medium shots of talking characters...

Bottom line: The only positive things about this movie are its shorter-than-usual runtime and the actors still trying to make a professional job, while anything else appears to be carried out on amateur level.

By the way, note the "mirror scare"! You will probably not get a more nihilistic variation of this horror trope anywhere - which is very exemplary for the entire movie.
